lent-copy.jpgSomeone asked me the other day what I was giving up for Lent this year…. and I said “What Lent?’

After Ash Wednesday begins Lent and for the next 40 days until Easter people try to give up temptations, usually of something they like e.g. chocolate.

This 40 days period is said to represent the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert resisting Satan’s temptation.

The question was: What is the temptation at work, at home, around the family and others that would help you develop if you succeed in resisting temptations for the next 40 days.

Temptations come in many forms including: (at work) back stabbing, overworking, negativity, bullying, not saying no, complaining, and taking long lunches or surfing the internet in work time.

What temptation at work stops you being productive and effective as you could be?

At home: being grumpy, impatient towards our children or spouse, etc

Towards other we meet: judgmental, unfriendly face, did you pass by a beggar or homeless without even giving alms or smile etc

Towards animals: did you pet them enough or provided enough food etc

She went on and on and explained that I should try and take these 40 days to challenge myself in resisting any temptations.

I look her in the eyes and thank her for the information and also told her that for me :

Lent is a time for conversion when we think again about whom we have become and who God calls us to be.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until Holy Thursday
